Golf Emergencies

Golf courses, country clubs, and driving ranges - these places signal fun, boys' or girls' time, and a place to relax. Though golf is a low risk activity, as with anything else, risk still exists when participating in any physical activity. Knowing what to do in an emergency and being prepared is highly important to a fun, safe, memorable golf outing.

Many areas use 911 , the emergency call number. With the common carrying of cell phones, pressing three little buttons can bring help faster than ever. Before dialing 911 , know the following tips:

Do NOT Call 911 for the following reasons:

  1. To see if your phone works on a remote golf course
  2. As a consequence of losing a round of golf - making someone call 911 and say things to make him/herself look foolish is not the way to act on the course
  3. To rant about anyone annoying on the golf course who are holding up your game
  4. From excitement caused by a great hole, such as a hole in one, and mistake your reaction for a heart attack
  5. Hitting an animal with your golf ball, such that it needs medical attention

Calling 911 when you're out golfing:

  1. If you're having chest pain that could signal a heart attack, or stroke
  2. Sudden, unexpected allergic reaction while playing a round
  3. Major trauma involving golf clubs or golf balls, especially to the head
  4. Injury accidents involving golf carts
  5. Wild animals (snakes, raccoons, other wildlife) bites or attacks

When calling 911 , you need to stay calm and on the line with the dispatcher until told otherwise. Answer any questions clearly and calmly, so that emergency personnel can most effectively respond to the emergency. If using cell phone, 911 may not be able to see your location, so make sure to give your location to the dispatcher. Also, make sure to follow any directions given to you by the dispatcher, and if s/he says something that you do not understand, make sure you ask for clarification.
